1977年毕业于中国科技大学,1985-1988年美国芝加哥大学(Fellow, International Union against (Cancer, Geneva),1988-1990年在美国耶鲁大学生物化学与分子生物学系作博士后研究工作,1990-2009年在美国阿贡国家实验室(ANL)先后为助理研究员、副研究员、研究员(Scientist),并相继担任生物部的结构生物学研究中心(SBC)资深研究员、美国中西部结构基因组学研究中心蛋白质晶体学部负责人、美国传染病结构基因中心晶体结构测定负责人。2009年回国,任中国科学院生物物理研究所研究员,中科院上海生化及细胞所研究员,从事结构生物学研究,并作为蛋白质科学研究上海设施建设副总工程师,参与上海光源生物大分子5线6站的建设。在Nature、Science 和 Cell 等国际著名学术刊物上发表SCI论文100余篇;作为第一作者,向蛋白质数据库(PDB)提交了200余个新的(氨基酸序列同源性低于30%)蛋白质晶体结构
